2019 Delegation on the steps of Universidad de Habana
The Center has established a Comparative Law Program as part of its mission to expand international opportunities for law students and advance scholarship and intellectual exchange with communities around the world. The program was inaugurated in 2018 with delegations to Cuba in 2018 and 2019. The Program provides students at CUNY Law with a cross-cultural learning experience that allows them to obtain a deeper understanding of another country’s cultural and legal perspectives in relation to the United States and the international community. The Center hopes to resume its Comparative Law Program and lead future delegations to different countries around the world.
CUBA
Both the inaugural delegation in 2018 and the 2019 Delegation traveled to Havana, Cuba for a one-week onsite visit. Members of the 2019 Delegation received one credit for participating in this program. During the Program, delegates had the opportunity to meet with lawyers, judges, and activists in Cuba to learn about the Cuban legal structure, how laws in Cuba differ from laws in the United States, and how activists continue to push for the advancement of human rights in Cuba.

In a session with Federación de Mujeres Cubanas, delegates learned about issues of gender equality in Cuba and at the Puerto Rican Mission, delegates learned more about the strong relationship between Cuba and Puerto Rico. During classes at the University of Havana, delegates learned about the Cuban electoral system and the then-proposed, now ratified, new Cuban Constitution.
