A “Critical Voices: From Local to Global” discussion with human rights lawyer and activist Gay McDougall with Sorensen Center Fellow Shoshana Brown ’17 introducing and moderating Q&A. McDougall, recently renominated to serve on the UN Committee to End Racial Discrimination (CERD) by the Biden-Harris Administration, discusses how lawyers and activists can use UN mechanisms to hold the U.S. accountable for racial injustices.

McDougall was the first UN Independent Expert on Minority Issues and the Special Rapporteur on the issue of systemic rape and sexual practices in armed conflict. She has spoken at the Sorensen Center almost every year with previous talks covering CERD’s Response to Charlottesville, China’s ongoing crackdown on Uighurs and Muslim minorities, and race and identity in South Africa and the U.S. She also serves on the Center’s Advisory Board. She is recipient of the MacArthur “Genius” award and currently serves as distinguished scholar at the Leitner Center on International Law and Justice and the Center on Race, Law, and Justice at Fordham Law School. She serves on the Sorensen Center’s Advisory Board.
