Critical Voices: Money & Right-Wing Influence: Threats to Democracy and Human Rights
October 21, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
Mukami Marete and Dr. Stellah Bosire, Co-Executive Directors of UHAI – The East African Sexual Health and Rights Initiative, and Anne Nelson, award-winning journalist and author of the forthcoming book of SHADOW NETWORK: Media, Money, and the Secret Hub of the Radical Right (released on October 29) lead a discussion on threats to democracy and human rights. An early review described Anne’s book as “an absolutely momentous piece of investigative journalism.”
UHAI is Africa’s first indigenous activist fund for sex workers and sexual and gender minorities. Marete and Bosire are queer feminists who have devoted their lives to strengthening the voice of the LGBTQI community in East Africa. Before joining UHAI, Marete worked with Kenya Human Rights Commission and was actively involved in the sexual and reproductive health rights program. Bosire’s expertise, both locally and internationally, is in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, focusing on vulnerable populations. In her book, Nelson tracks how, over the last four decades, the Council for National Policy has become a strategic nerve center for channeling money and mobilizing votes behind the scenes.
Co-sponsors for this event include: BLSA, ILS, Law Review, LIPSE, MLSA, NLG, and Outlaws. Refreshments will be served at the start followed by a brief reception after the discussion.
